Crude oil and gasoline futures fell sharply Thursday following a worse-than-expected June payroll report from the US Department of Labor. The drop in oil futures came on top of Wednesday's weekly supply report showing cuts in US stockpiles.
The US Department of Labor reported that the nation's jobless rate rose to 9.5% in June after businesses cut 467,000 workers from payrolls. The news shook Wall Street with the Dow losing more than 2% in midday trading Thursday.
Non-farm payrolls fell 473,000 in June, according to the latest ADP employment report. The drop in employment over the prior three months averaged 492,000, compared to 691,000 during the prior year's three-month period, a marked improvement.
