Kalamazoo River flooding threatens oil spill containment

(AXcess News) New York - Accuweather reports that flooding on the Kalamazoo river may hamper efforts to clean up an 800,000 gallon oil spill on one of Michigan's major waterways that happened when a pipeline operator spilled the fuel.  Mich. Gov. Jennifer Granholm says that so far she "isn't satisfied with cleanup efforts."

The spill occurred along Talmadge Creek where containment booms have been implemented.  The company that operates the 30-inch pipeline, Enbridge, Inc. (TSX: ENB), has about 200 workers spread out along the spill, though the oil has been making its way into the Kalamazoo River which is threatened by flooding.

Accuweather reported that Kalamazoo Michigan usually gets about 3.8 inches of rain during the month of July but 2 inches fell in just two days July 24th and 25th and another half-inch of rain is now possible.

The oil slick from Monday's pipeline spill stretchss sixteen miles and while weather forecasters are hopeful for clear skies Thursday and Friday, any change in that condition could radically affect clean up efforts.  An EPA spokesman says the Agency is hoping to contain the spill before it reaches Lake Michigan.
